A Maryborough mum’s journey to become a nurse
Louise Lovett is on an inspiring journey as she pursues a Diploma in Nursing (HLT54121) through Bendigo TAFE in Maryborough.
Living with her family in Maryborough, Louise was thrilled to discover a local nursing program through the Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) Facebook page. The convenience of studying close to home allowed her to balance family life with her education, making the experience much easier.
During her studies, Louise has enjoyed anatomy and physiology, which laid the foundation for everything she learned. Every student placement opened her eyes to a different area of specialisation.
Through coursework, Louise has acquired vital skills such as patient observation and effective communication. These skills are essential for patient safety and wellbeing, particularly for administering medication and providing mental health support.
Louise has some thoughtful advice for anyone considering a nursing career.
“Be dedicated and invest time in your studies. The rewards are worth it. If help is offered, take it! The instructors are incredibly supportive. Reaching out for assistance can make a big difference.”
Louise suggests prospective students create a study schedule to keep track of assignments and develop good study habits. With exciting plans ahead, she has been accepted into the 2025 Transition to Practice Nurse Graduate program at MDHS.
“I’m eager to put my skills into practice and continue learning with the support of experienced educators,” she said. She is also open to future studies.
Her training experience at MDHS has been enriching. The hands-on placements provided valuable experience. She has also secured a part-time position as a Health Care Worker at Wattle Rise Residential Community.
“This role has allowed me to apply what I’ve learned in real-world settings, which is so beneficial for my career,” she explains.
Louise appreciates the kindness and encouragement she’s received from staff at MDHS and Bendigo TAFE. Training at a rural health service has given provides unique advantages.
“I’ve met incredible nurses who have inspired me and shared their knowledge willingly. “Being able to live, study, and work in my community has also been a fantastic opportunity,” she said.
Although Louise initially felt apprehensive about returning to study later in life, the unwavering support from family has made all the difference.
Looking to the future, Louise remains open to various career pathways. While theatre nursing first caught her attention, placements in areas from aged care to mental health have sparked new interests.
“The diploma opens doors to so many areas of nursing, and I’m excited to explore them all,” she said.
Louise believes that success in nursing hinges on listening, learning, determination, and compassion. “A good sense of humour and teamwork are equally important,” said Louise.
