About Us
Changing the healthcare story
Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) is progressive rural healthcare provider in the heart of the Central Goldfields region in Victoria, providing care across all stages of life from pre-natal and newborn babies to aged care recipients, and their families and carers.
Our vision is to change the healthcare story with our community. We are driven by our purpose to connect our community to GREAT healthcare.
We provide a wide variety of medical services, from acute and urgent care to maternity, oncology and surgical services, as well as allied health services, community services and residential aged care.
MDHS services the Central Goldfields and Pyrenees Shire. Our dedicated team of medical specialists and caregivers are committed to providing quality person-centred care from across our modern campuses in Maryborough, Avoca and Dunolly, and in the community.
Our team of more than 450 staff live by our values to deliver on our patient promise, and provide best-practice health care to the right patient at the right time. We treat 9,000 patients a year and there are more than 120 beds in daily use across our services.
With a new $100 million dollar hospital and student accommodation on the way we are expanding our programs, services and facilities, and continue to attract the best people.
We work with a range of partners to deliver high-quality care and treatment, and teaching and education programs.
We’re invested in understanding the experiences of our patients and community, and are using new and innovative ways to provide care and support them.
Our history
Our health service has a proud history. For more than 160 years, we have been a valuable asset in the local community. Maryborough Hospital first opened in 1857 during the gold rush, and over the decades, we’ve grown, expanded and developed to meet the health needs of our community.
Maryborough District Health Service was established in 1993 under the Health Services Act 1988, after the amalgamation of Maryborough and District Hospital, Maryborough and District Hospice Inc, Central Victorian Community Health Services Inc and the Dunolly District Hospital. Following this, the Maryborough District Accommodation Group Inc and the Avoca Bush Nursing Hospital joined Maryborough District Health Service in 1995 and 1999.
We are on the cusp of an incredible new era as we plan and build our new hospital. We know our community wants to work with us to prosper and be healthy, as we address longstanding challenges of health and social outcomes in our communities.
Board of Management
The volunteer members of the Board of Management oversee the strategic direction of MDHS. Members are appointed for one, two, or three-year terms by the Governor in Council and are responsible for the provision of agreed services within the resources available.
The Board of Management is the governance body of MDHS, which includes monitoring the financial management, risk management, care standards and compliance with regulations and legislation.
