Community voices to shape the future of MDHS
Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) has completed the first stage of community engagement to inform our new Strategic Plan which will guide the future of your local health services.
We thank all community members from the Central Goldfields, Pyrenees Shire and surrounding areas who shared their experiences and priorities through the Your Voice, Our Future community survey, conducted between mid-October and mid-November. Feedback was received via online and hard copy surveys.
More than 90 per cent of respondents have accessed MDHS services in the past two years, with Urgent Care the most accessed service. Participants were predominantly aged between 35 to 84, reflecting a broad cross-section of the local community.
The survey showed strong engagement and highlighted what matters most to our community:
- Access to care: Eight in ten respondents travel outside the region for specialist or emergency services. The community wants more services closer to home, extended service hours and flexible care options.
- Workforce and sustainability: Ensuring a strong and sustainable workforce is a top priority, alongside support for local doctors and health care staff.
- Patient experience: Most people feel safe, respected and well-supported when using MDHS services.
- Mental health and wellbeing focus: Respondents highlighted the importance of mental health support, prevention programs and overall wellbeing.
- Service improvements: Clear communication, parking and ongoing staff development were also key suggestions.
“The feedback shows that our community values local healthcare and wants a say in shaping its future.
“This feedback gives us a clear picture of community priorities and the challenges people face,” said MDHS Board Chair Dr Judy Lowthian said.
The next step is to refine these priorities and turn them into actionable plans.
“This next step is about continuing to work together, openly and honestly to shape a plan that is realistic, responsive and focused on improving access to care close to home.”
“Thank you to our community for helping us prioritise what matters most and share your ideas on how care can be improved locally. Your collective insights, experiences and commitment make a real difference. We truly appreciate the time and thought you’ve contributed to shaping better care for everyone,” said MDHS Acting CEO Debbie Rogers.
Results from these consultations will directly inform the final Strategic Plan, which will be released by mid-2026.
