Have a yarn about health at SistaCare session

Friday 6th September, 2024

As a follow up to Women’s Health Week, Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) is inviting First Nations Women to come and have a yarn about women’s health and wellbeing at a SistaCare session at The Nest.

The SistaCare Session will be held from 10 am to 12 noon on Tuesday 10 September at 91 Nolan Street in Maryborough.

The drop-in session aims to help close the gap by giving First Nations Women the chance to meet MDHS Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officers and women’s health nurses.

Come and have a yarn about health matters to help take care of women’s business such as health checks, cervical cancer screening, contraception and sexual health.

The SistaCare Session will also provide the chance to learn more about a free, culturally safe breast screening program coming to Maryborough in October.

The Beautiful Shawl Project is a collaboration between BreastScreen Victoria and the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO).

It aims to provide a culturally safe and responsive alternative to traditional screening for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women from the age of 40 are eligible for free breast screening as part of The Beautiful Shawl project.

MDHS is partnering with BreastScreen Victoria and VACCHO to host free breast screening for First Nations Women on 1 and 8 October.

Women who attend these breast screening sessions will receive a beautiful shawl to use during the screening and take home as a gift.

To find out more join the upcoming SistaCare Session, or contact MDHS Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officers.

At the SistaCare Session you’ll hear from our local BreastScreen radiographer on why breast screening is important and what to expect on the day.
