Join us to celebrate Children’s Day
Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) invites local families to celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day at a free community event on Monday 5 August.
The event will run from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm at The Salvation Army in Maryborough.
“This is a great chance to come together as a community to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children with a fun day of craft and cultural activities,” said Kymberley Williams, Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer at MDHS.
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day is celebrated each year on 4 August to honour and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids.
“The theme this year is Strong in Culture, Stronger Together,” said Kymberley.
This day allows everyone to show their support and learn how important culture, family and community are for these children.
“We want to empower our kids to feel proud of who they are and where they come from – their culture, stories, kin and community,” said Kymberley.
When children are strong in culture, they are strong in identity. The day also raises awareness about the challenges these kids face and works to make their lives better.
The event will start with a Welcome to Country and a smoking ceremony at 10.00 am. It will include a free BBQ with healthy options and lots of giveaways.
Activities will be run by more than 20 local organisations and services including art and crafts, planting, puzzles, smoothie bike, emergency services and more.
“Come along to have some fun and show your support. Last year we had a brilliant day with lots of children from local primary schools, kinders, pre-schools and families,” she said.
