MDHS delivers cancer program to support patients, families and carers
Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS), in partnership with Cancer Council Victoria, is now accepting bookings for a free ‘Managing Cancer and Exercise Program’, commencing in February.
The eight-week group program is designed to support people living with cancer by providing practical education, guided exercise and peer support to help participants better manage their health and wellbeing throughout their cancer journey.
“This program is about empowering people with cancer through education, exercise and connection,” said Sandy Shepherd, Exercise Physiologist, Maryborough District Health Service.
“The program equips participants with practical strategies to manage their condition while supporting both physical and social wellbeing.”
Each weekly session runs for 90 minutes and offers a welcoming, supportive environment where participants can engage in tailored exercise, learn from qualified allied health professionals and connect with others who have shared experiences.
“Participants can take part in supervised exercise, learn about healthy eating, manage fatigue and build emotional resilience.
We know cancer affects people in different ways, and welcoming carers and loved ones helps strengthen the support available to participants, said Ms Shepherd.
Participants will receive a personalised exercise plan under expert supervision.
“Regular exercise is a vital component of cancer care,” said Ms Shepherd.
“Participants have reported improvements in quality of life, reduced treatment-related side effects and enhanced emotional wellbeing,” said Ms Shepherd.
The program runs every Monday from 2 February to 23 March, 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm at the Health and Movement Centre in Maryborough. An assessment is required before starting.
To enroll or find out more, contact Sandy Shepherd on (03) 5461 0333 (press 1) by Tuesday 27 January. Individuals, carers and family members can self-refer, and referrals are also accepted from health professionals.
