Pack a healthy lunch as kids get back to school
As children return to school, it’s time to prepare for a busy term ahead and that includes packing lunch boxes.
MDHS supports National Lunchbox Week starting from 9-15 February.
The annual campaign run by Nutrition Australia, aims to inspire families to pack healthy lunchboxes.
The start of the school year provides an opportunity for parents, caregivers and schools to encourage children to enjoy healthy, balanced meals throughout the school day.
MDHS dietitian provides education, advice and programs that promote health through improved eating and modified diets to encourage good nutritional habits.
“A well-balanced lunch plays a vital role in keeping children energised and focused,” said Emajun Patten Dietitian, Maryborough District Health Services.
“To create a nutritious lunch, aim for a variety of food groups such as fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and water.”
Making lunch fun is another key to success. Involving children in the lunch preparation can be a great way to encourage healthier choices.
“Letting children help pick out their lunch items gives them a sense of ownership and can make them more likely to eat what has been packed.”
“National Lunchbox Week is a wonderful reminder to rethink how we approach meal planning and help make back-to-school time enjoyable and nutritious,” said Ms Patten
“With a little creativity and attention to balance, families can ensure their children are set up for a successful, healthy school year.”
