R U OK? Convoy Inspires Conversations
In a powerful reminder of the importance of connection, the R U OK? Conversation Convoy rolled into our Avoca Residential Community and Maryborough campus at Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) last week.
The convoy travels across Australia, promoting vital conversations about mental health and encouraging individuals to check in on each other.
Since September, the R U OK? Conversation Convoy has journeyed through nearly 50 regional towns, starting from New South Wales and making its way to Canberra, via Tasmania and Regional Victoria.
This week, we were privileged to host the R U OK? Conversation Convoy at our Avoca Residential Community and Maryborough campus.
During these visits, our residential community residents and staff had the opportunity to engage with R U OK? ambassadors Garry and Shirley Semmens
Gary and Shirley are a retired couple with backgrounds in social work who shared their lived experiences over a BBQ lunch and a cuppa.
“It’s crucial to remember that a simple ‘R U OK?’ can spark life-changing conversations,” said Garry Semmens.
“We’re here to empower individuals to reach out and check in on each other,” he said.
These event served as a poignant reminder of the importance of staying connected and prioritising self-care.
Shirley Semmens shared her insights working in the community.
“We all play a part in creating a supportive community. By sharing our stories, we can inspire others to seek help and be there for one another,” said Mrs Semmens.
Maria R U OK? Community Development Manager shared her experience in the community and health sector, focusing on child, youth and family services, particularly within multicultural communities at the Maryborough campus.
Residents and staff at Avoca and Maryborough had the chance to engage in meaningful conversations and hear firsthand accounts of resilience and recovery.
“Events like these remind us that mental health matters, and it’s okay to talk about it,” said David Edwards, Deputy CEO, Maryborough District Health Services. “We’re committed to fostering a culture of care and support within our community.”
We encourage everyone to take a moment to check in with their loved ones as a simple conversation can make a significant difference.
