Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) will begin welcoming patients into its new $115 million hospital from Monday 28 April, following the expansion and upgrade of Maryborough and District Hospital.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan and Member for Ripon Martha Haylett today joined MDHS staff and project partners to officially open and tour the facility.
MDHS Chief Executive Officer Nickola Allan said the completion of the new hospital was a historic moment for the region.
“This is a once-in-a-generation transformation of our health service, and we’re incredibly proud to be standing at the doorstep of this new era for care in Maryborough,” said Ms Allan.
“This is more than bricks and mortar—it’s about improving access to the care our community needs, close to home and in a modern, purpose-built environment.”
Operations in the new facility begin on Monday 28 April with services commencing in dialysis, pharmacy, outpatient appointments and medical imaging (by appointment).
Urgent Care, Maternity and the Inpatient Unit will open from 7am on Tuesday 29 April for acute care.
Visitors will be welcomed into the new hospital from 4pm, with most services returning to standard operations by 30 April. Planned surgeries will start from mid-May.
“We’re asking our community to bear with us as we carefully manage the transition over the coming week,” said Mrs Allan.
“Our teams have done a huge amount of preparation to ensure a safe, smooth move—checking every corridor, rehearsing scenarios and training in the new spaces.
“Our priority is making sure patients and staff feel confident and supported from day one,” she said.
The new state-of-the art hospital includes a 32 bed inpatient unit, two birthing suites, operating theatres and a Medical Day Unit.
It also includes new consultant suites, a reception area, café and additional car parking.
“This hospital is a testament to what’s possible when community, vision and government come together,” said Mrs Allan,
“To every person who played a part – thank you. This hospital is here for our community, and we can’t wait to welcome our first patients next week.”
Patients seeking urgent care should attend the new Urgent Care Centre via the Neill Street entrance from 7am on 29 April. The main entrance to the old hospital will be closed from 5pm that day.
