As part of the Victorian Rural Generalist Program Gabe’s journey as a junior doctor has brought him to the heart of rural Victoria, where he’s embraced the challenges and rewards of working as a GP intern in Maryborough.

For Gabe his experience at Maryborough District Health Service was not only about medical growth but also about finding a place to call home during his rotations. A place where he could focus on his work and studies without worrying about the logistical difficulties of accommodation.

Two years ago, introducing new student accommodation in Maryborough, marked a turning point for medical professionals like Gabe. He’s one of many who have benefited from this service, making  it easier for him to stay in the area during his work weeks and commute back to Ballarat to spend time with his partner on his days off. For Gabe, it’s was a practical solution to a significant challenge.

“Without this accommodation, it would be extremely hard to find something affordable for a 10-week stay,” said Gabe.

“It was incredibly convenient my commute to work is a 15-second walk, and it’s safe and secure which is a huge relief.

“Plus, the facilities are really good. There’s cooking equipment, a fridge and everything you need for an extended stay. It’s allowed me to focus on my work without any distractions fully.”

Gabe’s role at Maryborough District Health Service has been hands-on and fulfilling. As a junior doctor in his internship year, Gabe worked primarily in the theatre, assisting anaesthetists and surgeons in various procedures. This gave him invaluable exposure to the inner workings of rural medicine, where one day he might be reviewing patients after surgery and the next, assisting in the operating theatre. The work was challenging but rewarding particularly as Gabe’s interest in anaesthetics and critical care grows.

With the student accommodation now in its third year of operations, it’s clear that this investment has been a game-changer for Gabe and others like him, providing a stable foundation during a busy and sometimes unpredictable internship year. With this support, Gabe could focus on his growth as a doctor, all while making memories in the welcoming, close-knit community in the Central Goldfields. Thank you Gabe. Here’s to many more years of helping medical students and junior doctors thrive in rural Victoria.
