V-squad hits the road for winter dose

Friday 13th May, 2022

Members of the Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) vaccination team, also known as the v-squad, recently hit the road to visit residential aged care communities in Avoca, Dunolly and WattleRise Maryborough.

The team were tasked with the mission of giving local aged care residents a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as well as their seasonal influenza (flu) vaccine.

“The team administered more than 100 vaccinations across the three locations in one day, which is an extraordinary effort,” said Heather Blazko, Associate Director of Nursing – Acute Services, Maryborough District Health Service.

“These vaccinations will help keep our aged care residents safe as we move into the winter months.

“It’s nice to be finishing our COVID-19 vaccination program back where we started in March last year, with the aim of protecting some of the most vulnerable members of our community,” she said.

As Victoria moves into winter, an additional booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for people at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19 who have already had a third booster dose.

The cold weather can make it easier for viral infection. It is also recommended that everyone over six months of age get an annual influenza shot ahead of the peak flu season, which generally runs from to September. To get a COVID-19 vaccine or booster contact your local GP, pharmacy or larger state-run vaccination centre.

To get your flu vaccine, contact your local GP, pharmacy or the Central Goldfields Shire Council immunisation team.
