Join our cancer wellness program
Have you had a recent cancer diagnosis and want to take charge of your wellness?
Maryborough District Health Service is running a free eight week Cancer Wellness Exercise and Education Program, in partnership with the Cancer Council.
Exercise physiologists will run the program from 7 September to help people with cancer to self-manage their condition, reduce symptoms and boost their wellbeing.
“The cancer wellness program runs each week from our Health and Movement Centre in Maryborough,” said Demi, Exercise Physiologist, Maryborough District Health Service
“It aims to provide people on a cancer journey with the knowledge they need to help maintain their physical and social wellbeing.
“The group program runs once a week for eight weeks. The 90 minute sessions provide a fun and supportive environment to learn, exercise, share experiences and build peer support.
“Past participants have described the program as brilliant. It covers topics such as healthy eating, physical activity and exercise, managing fatigue, emotions and wellness, bone and foot health, intimacy and more,” said Demi.
The program is open to anyone with a cancer diagnosis, is undergoing treatment or who has completed cancer treatment.
It provides the chance for participants to complete a tailored exercise program under the supervision of an accredited exercise physiologist. Family, friends and carers are also welcome to join.
“Exercise is an excellent form of medicine. Exercise is good for cancer patients and has many protective benefits before, during and after treatment,” said Demi.
“Exercise programs are tailored to meet individual needs. Benefits include improved quality of life, a reduction in the severity of treatment related side-effects such as fatigue, stress relief and an increase in survival rates,” she said.
